what to feed your love birds

  • Lovebirds can eat a variety of seeds and nuts but that feeding them only with seeds and nuts can lead to vitamin deficiency.
  • A diet consisting of a small parrot mix along with a variety of supplements and vitamins is generally regarded as suitable
  • A lovebirds diet will consist of 1 1/2 to 2 ounces (45-60 grams) of feed daily for a single bird
  • You should always feed your birds a mixture of seeds, fruits and vegetables to insure a healthy lovebird.
  • Feed your birds with fresh fruits and vegetables each day in along with the seed for healthy balanced diet for your lovebirds.
  • A recommended food is a seed mix that will say "recommended for lovebirds". To stay healthy, for every meal they need something nutritional.
  • Give them fresh food treats three to four times a week.
  • They love fruits and vegetables such as apples, carrots, broccoli, cabbage and spinach. Whole grain breads are okay, but avoid high fat, salt and sugar.
  • Always get rid of any uneaten food from the cage.
  • Additional proteins can be offered such as nuts, try some unshelld peanuts as well as hazelnuts, walnuts, Brazil nuts, and chestnuts.
  • A cuttlebone or gravel and oyster shell in a separate dish should be offered to provide calcium.
  • Do not feed avocado, as it can be toxic to birds!

It is not enough to feed a Lovebird just to keep it alive.. Proper nutrition will help it thrive and flourish. Your bird's entire health will depend on how well it is fed.Lovebirds eat a variety of seeds, fruits, berries and vegetation such as leaf buds. Some species have been known to attack farmers' crops and are recognized as pests in their natural environment. A well balanced and varied diet must be maintained at all times

SEEDS

Commercial seed mixes may contain from 4 - 10 different kinds of seeds and nuts. The problem that exists when offering a large container of seed to a Lovebird, is that the bird proceeds to selectively eat 1 or 2 of its 'favourite' types of seed only. Millet and sunflower seeds are often chosen preferentially. This, of course, leads to further malnutrition. If a smaller amount of a good quality seed mix is offered then it is likely the bird will eat a greater variety of seed.

CORN FEEDING

If your lovebird is going to lay eggs feed it with more amount of corn in alternative days. This will help to get healthy chicks.

 FEEDING LEVEL

As a guideline, most Lovebirds can be maintained on 1 - 1.5 level 'measure' teaspoons of seed per bird, per day in a shallow dish depending on the size of the bird. If there is more than one Lovebird in the cage, separate dishes should be used.

As a general rule regarding food offered to a bird, any wholesome, nutritious food that you and your family eat, Fruits, vegetables and greens should  account for approximately 20 - 25% of the diet.

Fruits and vegetables  must be washed thoroughly to remove chemicals and cut into manageable pieces depending on the size of the bird.

WATER

Fresh clean water must be available at all times. Dishes must be cleaned thoroughly every day, especially the tube or gravity water containers.
